The Spring Peeper is named perfectly. Every spring in the eastern United States, this small ground-dwelling chorus frog can be heard making its famous tiny peeps in huge choruses as soon as soon as the Winter temperatures start to rise. This eagerness to get the year started often gets them into trouble when the unpredictable weather of the Northeast reverts back to freezing temperatures after warm streaks during March. Luckily, like many of the frogs who inhabit the Northeast, spring peepers are equipped with the ability to produce an internal antifreeze called glycerol that does just enough to protect the frogs cells while it’s body and blood freeze rock solid, and it’s heartbeat and breathing stop for months. Spring rolls around and they simply thaw out and carry on like normal.
