This striking amphibian, with its glossy black skin and vibrant yellow spots, is native to the deciduous forests of eastern North America. Each year, it emerges during the first warm, rainy nights of spring to return to the very same pools where it was born - a spectacular migration known as the “Big Night.” Even more remarkable, this salamander is one of the only vertebrates known to form a symbiotic relationship with algae, which lives inside its eggs and helps remove waste, and provide oxygen to the developing larvae. In return, the ammonia waste from the eggs helps create an optimal environment for the algae. Quiet, loyal to its birthplace, and glowing with evolutionary oddities, the Yellow Spotted Salamander is one of nature’s hidden masterpieces.
