Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus)

To most people, the common and modest Wood Frog might not seem extraordinary - but this amphibian is one of the toughest survivors in the animal kingdom. Found across forests, wetlands, and even tundra from the Appalachian Mountains to the Arctic Circle, the Wood Frog is the only frog known to live north of the Arctic tree line. What makes that possible? Similar to the Gray tree frog and other North Eastern frogs, it can freeze completely solid. However, what separates the Wood Frog even further is how quickly it is able to thaw out and become active, allowing for early breeding in temporary meltwater pools before predators arrive. They also have a much shorter evolution time from eggs to froglets. This allows them to take advantage of short Arctic summers. It is also believed that the Wood Frog has evolved a more efficient form of "anti-freeze" that allows them to survive more extreme temperatures, for a longer amount of time. In fact, the Wood Frog’s freeze tolerance is so impressive that medical researchers have studied it as a model for cryopreservation - potentially opening doors to organ storage and even long-term space travel. A mechanical engineering professor even developed an anti-icing material that mimicked the Wood Frog's freeze tolerance, which was recognized by NASA's iTech initiative.
