Strawberry Poison Dart Frog (Oophaga pumilio)
Family: Dendrobatidae
The Strawberry Poison Dart Frog is one of Central America’s most iconic amphibians. Found from Nicaragua through Panama, this tiny frog—often just an inch long—gets its name from its vivid red body, often contrasted by blue or black legs, earning it the nickname “blue jeans frog.” But this species is a true artist of variation: across its range, Oophaga pumilio exhibits over 15 distinct color morphs, from tangerine orange to deep turquoise, each tied to isolated populations. The Strawberry Poison Dart Frog is one of the few amphibians known to have female-dominant parental care. Mothers lays eggs on land, then carry the hatched tadpoles one by one on her back to tiny pools of water, often in bromeliad leaves. They remember the exact location of each tadpole, sometimes scattered across dozens of plants, and revisit each one every few days for feeding—a remarkable display of navigation, intelligence, and maternal precision in the amphibian world.
