Red-Spotted Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens)
Family: Salamandridae
Found throughout eastern North America, this vibrant salamander lives a life of transformation, passing through not two, but three distinct life stages: aquatic larva, land-dwelling juvenile (called an “eft”), and finally, a return to the water as a breeding adult. During the eft stage (when it is most recognizable), it roams forest floors in a bright orange-red suit marked with vivid red spots - an unmistakable warning to predators that it carries powerful toxins in its skin. Some individuals remain in this land phase for up to seven years before making their way back to water. The Red-Spotted Newt is a living example of the balancing act of adaptation, weaving through life between worlds both aquatic and terrestrial.
