Red-Eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas)

The Red-Eyed Tree Frog, with its lime green skin and iconic scarlet eyes, is one of the most visually recognizable amphibians on the planet. Native to the tropical rainforests of Central America, it spends most of its life in the treetops, using its powerful suction-cup toes to cling to leaves high above the forest floor. Despite its striking colors, this frog is not poisonous - it relies on a tactic called startle coloration, flashing its bright eyes and body suddenly to confuse predators and make a quick getaway. At night, these frogs become active, leaping through the canopy in search of insects and mates, often near rain-filled pools where they lay eggs on leaves overhanging the water. Red-Eyed Tree Frog embryos can actually hatch early on command - if vibrations from a snake or wasp are detected, the tadpoles will wriggle out of their eggs prematurely and drop into the water below to escape being eaten. It’s a built-in emergency exit system.
