Mimic Poison Frog Beanie
Mimic Poison Frog (Ranitomeya imitator)
Family: Dendrobatidae
The Mimic Poison Frog is a master of disguise found in the rainforests of northeastern Peru. True to its name, this species copies the appearance of several other toxic frogs in its habitat, a rare and sophisticated evolutionary tactic known as Müllerian mimicry. Depending on the region, individuals may appear orange, yellow, or green, each morph resembling a different poisonous cousin to confuse predators and reinforce avoidance learning. The Mimic Poison Frog was the first amphibian ever discovered to exhibit monogamy and biparental care—two behaviors almost unheard of in the frog world. This parenting style is thought to have co-evolved with its choice of raising offspring in isolated, nutrient-poor puddles, where teamwork is essential for survival.
