Leucistic Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

With its ghostly pink-white skin, feathery external gills, and a perpetual Mona Lisa smile, the leucistic axolotl looks less like a real animal and more like something dreamed up in a sci-fi lab. Native to the ancient lake system of Xochimilco in central Mexico, this critically endangered amphibian is famous for not growing up. Unlike most salamanders, axolotls retain their larval features - gills, finned tails, and aquatic lifestyle - throughout their entire lives. Axolotls possess one of the most extraordinary regenerative abilities in the animal kingdom - they can fully regrow limbs, spinal cord tissue, parts of their heart, and even sections of their brain without scarring. Scientists are actively studying axolotls in hopes of unlocking new breakthroughs in human medicine.
