Green and Black Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus)

The Green and Black Poison Dart Frog is nature’s version of a warning label - vibrant, and best left alone. Native to the humid lowland rainforests of Central and South America, this tiny amphibian is a master of both camouflage and deterrence. Its vibrant colors serve as a loud message to predators: “I’m toxic.” The alkaloid toxins in its skin, derived from its wild diet of ants and other arthropods, can cause numbness, paralysis, or worse. Despite their dangerous reputation, poison dart frogs in captivity lose their toxicity when removed from their natural diet. Indigenous groups in Central and South America once used the secretions of these frogs to coat the tips of blow darts for hunting - hence the name. Today, scientists are studying these same compounds for potential use in powerful painkillers and heart medications.
