Gray tree frog (Dryophytes Versicolor)
Family: Hylidae
Due to its reclusive nature, elite camouflage, and loud trill, it’s more likely that you’ve HEARD a gray tree frog than it is that you’ve seen one. Given the unique scientific name of Versicolor, the gray tree frog is an elusive, color-shifting tree frog native to the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. It is one of only two tree frogs found in New England, which was made possible only by an adaptation which allows the frog's body and blood to freeze rock solid, it’s heartbeat and breathing to stop for months, and yet continue to wake up each spring and begin climbing trees and searching for food like nothing ever happened.
