The Golden Mantella is a tiny, jewel-toned amphibian found only in a few isolated patches of rainforest in central Madagascar. Despite their visual charm, they’re critically endangered due to habitat destruction, collection for the pet trade, and climate change. Like its distant relatives, the poison dart frogs of South America, this little mantella secretes toxins through its skin, a defense it develops from its diet in the wild. Unlike many amphibians, Golden Mantellas are diurnal, meaning they’re active during the day - emitting a rapid, clicking call that echoes through the undergrowth. Golden Mantellas are incredibly synchronized breeders - when the rains arrive, dozens to hundreds of them will gather and call in unison, creating a chorus that can be heard from over 100 meters away. This explosive, communal breeding event ensures that eggs are laid in temporary rain-filled pools, maximizing the survival chances of their young in a fleeting window of opportunity.
