The Blue Poison Dart Frog is a tropical masterpiece cloaked in cobalt blue skin dappled with inky black spots. Like its dart frog relatives, it secretes toxic alkaloids through its skin, a defense earned from its diet of toxic insects. However, that toxicity fades in captivity, where the frog’s diet lacks those same chemical precursors. The Blue Poison Dart Frog is active during the day, and fiercely territorial. Males can be seen chasing off rivals with surprising aggression for such a small amphibian. During breeding, males and females engage in a contact-heavy courtship. The male will gently nudge, press, or tap the female’s body with his snout or forelimbs.This touching isn’t random - it helps synchronize mating behavior, guiding the female to a suitable egg-laying site (like a leaf or rock).
