American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus) 

Family: Bufonidae 

Warty and wise-looking, the American Toad is a familiar sight (and sound) across gardens, forests, and meadows throughout eastern North America. Cloaked in earthy browns, reds, and tans with a scattering of dark spots and signature warts, it’s a master of blending in on the forest floor - until it opens its mouth. The American Toad’s long, musical trill can last up to 30 seconds and fills springtime nights with unmistakable calls of courtship. This frog thrives in both wild and suburban settings, feeding on insects, worms, and slugs with its impressively sticky tongue. It also produces a mild toxin from glands behind its eyes, making it a unappealing snack for most predators. American Toad tadpoles can recognize and avoid chemical cues from predators before they even hatch. Inside their eggs, they detect danger in the water and delay hatching to increase their chances of survival.
