American Green Tree Frog (Dryophytes cinereus)
Family: Hylidae
The American Green tree frog is easy to miss, but is a vibrant splash of life in the wetlands of the southeastern United States. Draped in smooth lime-green skin with a crisp white stripe along its side, they are often found blending in with the leaves and plant life, or right up against your porch lights, stuffing their face with bugs. During the breeding season, these frogs often find themselves in noisy environments with multiple species calling simultaneously. To focus on the calls of their own species, female green tree frogs inflate their lungs, causing their eardrums to become less sensitive to certain frequencies, essentially creating a natural form of noise cancellation which allows them to zero in on the sharp, quacking calls calls of potential mates from their own species.
